Spanish cinema has chosen this year 2025 as the setting for its most important awards ceremony. Celebrating the Goya Festival in Granada means placing the Nasrid city as a cultural and touristic event, because in addition to the official celebration there are also many other activities that will take place in the days previous to the awards ceremony.
Here on the blog of the Hotel Alhambra Palace we tell you everything you can't lose.
The 39th edition of the Goya Awards will be held in Granada on Saturday 8 February 2025. The gala will be held at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones in the capital, taking over from Valladolid, the city where the previous edition of the awards was held.
This is the 8th edition of the Goya Awards to take place outside Madrid. Barcelona hosted the awards ceremony in 2000 and, in recent years, cities such as Malaga (2020 and 2021), Seville (2019 and 2023), Valencia (2022) and Valladolid (2024) have hosted this celebration. Now the Goya Awards are coming to Granada, a ceremony that will be broadcast live on RTVE: the red carpet, from 19:15 pm, and the awards ceremony, from 22:00 pm.
The only award that is known with total certainty even before the start of the gala is the Goya of Honour. We already know that Aitana Sánchez-Gijón will collect her Goya in Granada in recognition of her long professional career, nearly 40 years of filmmaking that will make her, however, the youngest woman to collect the Goya of Honour in the history of the awards.
Maribel Verdú and Leonor Watling will be in charge of presenting the Goya Gala in Granada. They will have the honour of being the first female duo to do it.
For Watling it will be her first time in this role, but Verdú already has some experience, as she presented the ceremony in 2005, then in the company of Antonio Resines and Montserrat Caballé.
However, both have been on the Goya stage on many occasions. Leonor Watling has been nominated twice, while Maribel Verdú is, with eleven nominations throughout her career, the second actress who has had the option of receiving this award the most times. She is second only to Penélope Cruz, and she has also won two awards, for ‘Siete mesas de billar francés’ and ‘Blancanieves’.

The list of films nominated for the Goya Awards in Granada is quite diverse. The big favourite is ‘El 47’, by Marcel Barrena, which leads the ranking of nominations with a total of 14.
This film will be competing for the best film award with ‘The infiltrator’, ‘The blue star’, ‘House in flames’ and ‘Second prize’, Spanish candidate for the Oscars and filmed, precisely, in the city of the Alhambra.
Thirteen nominations go to ‘The Departed’, eleven to ‘Second Prize’ and ten to Pedro Almodóvar's ‘The Next Room’. Other outstanding candidates are ‘La virgen roja’ (9 nominations), ‘Casa en llamas’ and ‘La estrella azul’ (8 nominations) and ‘Marco’, which is up for 5 awards.
The Goya Awards in Granada are not just about the gala awards ceremony, there's much more! Numerous other activities have been planned in the city for film lovers: screenings, meetings and talks with the nominees, exhibitions...
Those who have wandered around the centre of the capital have already felt the atmosphere of the Goya Awards in Granada thanks to the photographic exhibitions located in the Carrera de la Virgen and in the Avenida de la Constitución. It is also possible to have your photograph taken with a giant figure of Goya at one of the eight points set up in the capital or in the courtyard of the Town Hall itself, where you can feel like the nominees themselves, having your photo taken at the photocall and holding a replica of Goya's statue.
As it could not be otherwise, in the Hotel Alhambra Palace we have everything ready to give a cinema welcome to all the lovers of the seventh art who want to spend these days in the city and live the Goya Awards in Granada in first hand.
